I consider myself a very basic person, so my “unpopular” opinions in the book community are probably not even that groundbreakingly unpopular. But just in case…
a popular book or series that you didn’t like
The Program (The Program, #1) by Suzanne Young
Warning: If you enjoyed this series in any way, it might be best to just quickly scroll down. I read and rate based off of personal enjoyment, and I did NOT enjoy this book at all.
I can literally write a ten page essay in 12-point Times New Roman font, MLA-format, double-spaced, with one-inch marigins, on how much I disliked this book.
Actually, I don’t think “dislike” is the right word.
I absolutely DETESTED everything about this series with all the fiery passion of one thousand million Extra Flaming Hot Cheetos. Actually, no, that doesn’t cut it either because Hot Cheetos aren’t even that spicy and if you can’t handle that level of spice you’re WEAKKK.
I mean, how in the world did depression suddenly become an epidemic? Where is the plausible scientific explanation for all of this? The characters are so bland? Also why am I typing like this?
My hatred for this series is more comparable to a 3000-leagues-long field of ghost chili peppers burning under the sun, in the middle of a forest fire.
(And don’t ask what chili peppers would be doing in the middle of a forest fire, because I don’t know either. It’s a metaphor, guys!!)
a popular book or series that every one else seems to hate but you love
The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I know that people don’t necessarily HATE this- it has a relatively large fandom, in fact- but I’ve read a considerable amount of reviews that call The Red Queen series cliche and derivative.
Well, not for me! 😀
These books are a guilty shameless pleasure. Of course, everyone has their own reading preferences, but I actually really enjoyed reading about Mare & Crew. ❤ Her abilities are similar to that of an angsty female Thor.
(Also, Victoria Aveyard’s website is so aesthetic?)
a love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn people for spoilers!)
Shadow and Bone (Shadow and Bone #1) by Leigh Bardugo
Massive spoilers if you haven’t finished reading the Grisha Trilogy!
Sorry, Mal who? Mal? I don’t know of this man-child.
I refuse to accept the ending bye!
A popular book genre that you hardly reach for
My go-to genres usually fall within YA- fantasy, historical, or contemporary- so I rarely, if ever, go for sci-fi. I probably should, though, but my TBR is intimidating enough as it is, and—
*continues to click away on GR until TBR list is 1000000x longer* Oops.
a popular or beloved character that you do not like
Cal from The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I really, really dislike Cal from The Red Queen. I can’t put my finger on why. I just do.
I should probably burn for saying this but… MAVEY!! MAVEY ALL THE WAY!! (Hey that rhymed! Even better. ;))
a popular author that you can’t seem to get into
Kiera Cass
I didn’t even have to think about this one.
Kiera Cass’s books are relatively popular, and I’m sure she’s a wonderful person, but I just can’t seem to enjoy any of her characters. There’s also the fact that America Singer makes me want to.. *angry noises*
I mean, what kind of name is America Singer? America??? SINGER??? Not to judge, but… #JUDGING REALLY HARD RIGHT NOW
a popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)
the “totally-special-damsel-meets-alpha-male-who-low-key-abuses-her-and-they-fall-in-angsty-love” trope
I feel like all tropes can be very entertaining if they’re done well. I mean, I’ve happily enjoyed my fair share of Forbidden Love and Love Triangles. But… wait… hmm… I think I’ve got one…
Hypothetical Situation: A Love Story by Hannah
Hot, brooding, mysterious alpha-male with biceps the size of dinner plates and washboard abs meets delicate, pure, pretty-but-doesn’t-know-it Special Snowflake. Apparently they “hate” each other.*
SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE: Oh! Oh, I feel a tingling in my loins.
ALPHA MALE: you’re MINEMINEMINEMINEMINE
SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE: But I hate you! But… my loins!
*Insta-Lust Ensues*
SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE: I’m so plain! I’m like, Plain Jane! But I’m also really sassy! (Narrator: She’s not.)
Alpha Male pretends to hate Special Snowflake but is secretly intrigued and totally attracted to her because she’s NOT LIKE MOST GIRLS. Alpha Male generally harasses the helpless, vulnerable, naive Special Snowflake until he dashingly swoops in to save the poor damsel from some terrible situation (i.e., attempted kidnapping, falling off of a cliff, death by angry flying crocodiles, etc etc).
But… his true feelings spill out! He confesses how much he loved her this whole time and they make out and fall in Love.
The 🙂 End 🙂 🙂 🙂
*Roles of Alpha Male and Special Snowflake are interchangeable by gender.
a popular series that you have no interest in reading
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
I know, I know! I hate myself, too!
the saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
I’d have to say Game of Thrones, because I haven’t actually read the book series yet! *hides*
I’m pretty sure that at one point, I picked up the first book, but the prospect of starting an entirely new series was just so intimidating that I, ahem, eventually kind of stopped. Let’s just really quickly add that to the never-ending list of Disappointing Things Hannah Has Done.
After the show ends, I’ll probably work my way through the books. For now, though, I’ll content myself with happily watching Arya Stark tear her way through the kingdom (and hopefully, through Cersei Lannister).
You can find the video of the original tag HERE, in case you want to check it out.
Oh, you did the tag! Yay! I love your answers! And, just so you know, you’re hilarious. Just wanted to tell you. 😉
Thanks for making me laugh. 🙂

I’ve only watched a few episodes of GoT and I really liked it (besides the excessive sex and gore) and while I adore the books, they are hard to get into so I don’t blame you. I also found myself more into Maven than Cal – so, in other words, were twins!

HAHA, I’m telling you!! book-soulmates!! book-mates!! I can’t really explain my fascination with Maven’s character. He’s probably insane, but oh well :^)
also, GOT is amazing!! watch!! now!!!!!!

We are bookish soulmates. I loved it! I’m kind of a Magnificent Century Kick rn but one day I will catch up on GoT.

right??? it’s low-key kind of scary. ;))))
but seriouslyyy yes watch GoT!! the newest season is just killing me right now.
and I think I’ve watched one episode or two of MC (about Hurrem’s arrival HAHA), and I’m pretty sure it’s on Netflix so I might start it soon??

Yes, but it’s also nice in a way. I don’t have Netflix. But I am keeping up to date on what is going on in GoT. I just watch MC on YouTube where it’s free.

HAHA ❤
and yeah it's really hard– maybe even impossible– to avoid spoilers for GOT because basically everyone knows all the major plot points //:

I don’t mind. I spoil myself all the time and it’s chill.

GoT is the only show I purposefully spoil myself in because the spoilers are so hard to avoid– I know it’s terrible, but I can’t resist watching leaked episodes :^)

Tell me about it. I can relate to much.

yesss I loved your rant for the trope question, I did this tag last week and my answer was pretty similar! The Game of Thrones books are really really long, I know, but I highly recommend them. It’s probably one of my favorite series of all time. I read them on and off over a period of about a year so I definitely get the intimidation, but I think it helps to take an on/off approach

Luckily for me, I don’t find that trope in the books I come across, but whenever I do, it’s an instant turn-off. It’s so incredibly annoying and not appealing in ANY way.
And I’ve heard so many good things about the GOT series!! Since the latest season aired recently, I’m starting to consider tackling the books again. D:

yesss! they’re def worth the effort 🙂 (I used them last year to fill the GoT void after season 6 ended) and hey, who knows when the next book is coming out so there’s no rush
LikeLiked by 1 person
Oh dear, I’ve also heard that the last book is taking FOREVER to come out! Apparently a lot of people are afraid that at the rate he’s going, the author’s going to pass away before he even publishes the finale. :0

I mean…..it’s definitely possible. I’m confident they would have someone ghostwrite the rest of the series tho, and I’m sure he must have enough notes and stuff planned out that they could manage something! There’s way too much hype and money on the line with this series for the publisher to just let it go

im literally crying with the alpha male and special snowflake dialogue this is the best thing ive seen all day

IT’S SO TRUE THOUGH???!?!!!!
also, your *comment* is the best thing I’ve seen all day 😉 ❤

I love the Shadow and Bone trilogy but I hate Mal so bad, Omg I can’t stand it😩. Team The Darkling here 😍
LikeLiked by 1 person
I KNOW!! Everything about him just rubs me the wrong way.
He’s nice and all, but his character just feels so BLAND next to Nicolae and the Darkling and even that one guy who likes spouting poetry randomly. I just get bored reading about it. I get that he’s treading new territory with Alina’s powers, and obviously he’s a little scared about it, but does he have to be so *unsupportive*?

i really had to skip the “shadow and bone” part 😂 still have to read that one!

Oh my, you should definitely read Leigh Bardugo’s books!!! The Grisha Trilogy was good, but the Six of Crows duology was even better :0 readdddd itttt!!

i read six of crows and loved it! next week will be the make me read it readathon and looks like people want me to read “crooked kingdom”. so that will happen! 🤗
LikeLiked by 1 person
Crooked Kingdom is AMAZING. It’s usually kind of hard for the sequel to surpass the first book, but Leigh Bardugo somehow pulls it off because she is a writing goddess. I love each and every one of my precious lil criminal crew. ❤

i am scared honestly, because ever body says that it’s better than six of crows! i hope i feel the same way!

that little trope dialogue is 11/10
agh, I want to read the grisha trilogy sort of… but not really??? I spoiled some parts for myself and I also heard that the majority of people’s ships sunk soooo I don’t want that to happen to me. but it’s leigh bardugo so idk??? and agh I read the selection when I was younger and liked it, but I’d probably have a different opinion on it now… 😛 great tag!

Aww thanks man :’) I rage-wrote it after reading some portions of a NA book :”)
Definitely read the grisha trilogy!!! In my opinion it’s not as good as SoC, but it’s still a super fun read. Unfortunately, my ship did sink and I will forever be salty about it.
(and do yourself a favor and stay as far away from the selection series as possible…. spare yourself the misery)

yeah NA is… 😐
agahgah okay! a lot of people seem to like it (tho not as much as soc of course <3) so i'll get to it… eventually. :')
(i'm tempted to reread it just so i can give it an accurate aka low rating but probably no. :') )

What a fun tag! Loved your Hypothetical Situation: A Love Story by Hannah… sooo funny! And I can’t read books like that anymore… in fact any new adult gives me pause, lol… The Selection was really eh to me… I can’t force myself to keep reading the series! Great answers 😁♥️

HAHA, thanks so much!! ❤ But it's so true, though… books like that make my eye twitch out of rage. And I can't believe I ever used to like "The Selection"– now that I think of it, I shouldn't be held accountable for the books that fetus me used to enjoy XD

your alpha male and snowflake dialogue though HA i couldn’t stop grinning i’m okay with hate to love relationships but i hate it when males are obsessive and condescending. MAVEY ALL THE WAY!! . mal and alina weren’t my favourite OTP either reading this tag was really fun!

Thank you so much!! You’re so sweet!! 😀 ❤
but yeah, it REALLY REALLY gets on my nerves when obsessive, controlling, and sometimes even downright abusive relationships are portrayed as "romantic" in any way. WORST THING EVER.

the alpha male and special snowflake one is so on point! But too bad majority of the YA fantasy’s basic plot is basically saving the world + who should I choose? hot badass alpha male or another ‘I have a dark past’ guy.
LikeLiked by 1 person
arghhh that’s unfortunately true for some fantasy series, and it makes me soso frustrated )):
but there’s a lot of good ones out there, too!! for instance, I LOOOVE Leigh Bardugo’s “six of crows” duology & would wholeheartedly recommend it!!
